I'll tell you when we meet! What are some common mistakes learners of English should avoid?
If you focus on your pronunciation when you start learning English, you will save yourself a headache later. There are a few typical sounds which are mispronounced by Russian students. These are best corrected early to avoid years of repetition. What are your students’ most significant language achievements?
My best student is a 13 year old girl who, 3 years after we started, now speaks fluently and accurately to a very advanced level. Her greatest achievements lie in the future but she has the linguistic tools to live and work wherever she wants in the world. -

16 летWhat I do as a language instructor and what I see as my key task as such can be summarized in just one sentence: I try to inspire my students to think outside the box. And the best compliment I have received from my students is that I manage to make studying such dull subjects (let's be honest) as Legal English feel like an exciting and breathtaking ride.

I have a list of three. Students should avoid double negatives (don't know nothing), subject-verb agreement errors (he don't have friends), and doubling up of the comparatives and superlatives (more better, most biggest). Why? These are native speakers' errors. These errors make the speaker sound uneducated, no matter where they come from, because we have that association already. Correct yourself immediately when you make these mistakes, and be patient with yourself the rest of the time. What are your students’ most significant language achievements?
I had one student whose grammar and sentence structure was so bad, neither one of us understood the other for about two to three weeks. I remember telling her the first lesson that I was moving to New York, and then when I told her I bought my tickets a few weeks later, she asked me, "Tickets where?" We took her from that level, and successfully prepared her for a month-long business trip to the United States. It was a concerted effort on both parts, and of course it was her achievement, but I was proud. What work or life experiences have helped you become a better teacher?
Being a foreigner — feeling lost and isolated and alone and confused. I think this, more than anything, has given me insight into the mind of the student. After all, I'm here to learn, myself. -

Remember that you will never be less busy than you are now! And if you have a chance to learn it now, it's not certain you'll have the same chance tomorrow, so DON'T MISS IT! Once you learn the language, you'll be always able to use it.What’s the best thing about teaching or learning a foreign language?

Why not switch to watching the usual stuff on TV in English, be it a feature film, a TV series or a programme? If you start your working day with a cup of coffee and the latest news, how about reading it in English? If you spend a lot of time online chatting with friends, make international friends! What are some common mistakes learners of English should avoid?
Students’ most common mistake is learning words separately, whilst be better off paying attention to collocations. -

Language is the thinnest tool of thought. By improving our language we improve ourselves. So, why not become a better person through perfecting your language? What are your students’ most significant language achievements?
The most significant language achievement for me is when the students don't think of the mechanics of the language any more and when the language becomes part of their life. What work or life experiences have helped you become a better teacher?
Any experience is good experience. But the most important for me are the cases when I had challenging situations in my classroom and I found the way to overcome them. -

12 летWhat’s the most important thing to remember when learning English?
The most important thing is to remember that there’s some difference between the mentality in Russia and in English-speaking countries. For instance, we do not have a category of definiteness. Therefore, articles are the main problem for Russians learning English. Another point is that one should treat information with care and thoroughly analyze not only the words, but the text structure as well. And some people are sure that it doesn’t matter how they speak because they think that everybody can still understand them. Here we encounter another problem, the attitude towards people who don’t speak the language well. Many Russians make fun of migrant workers who speak bad Russian. But they forget about the impression they make when they speak bad English. How can learners use their free time effectively to study English?
Having a satellite dish or Internet with international TV channels may help. At the initial stages of learning languages people can get accustomed to the sound of foreign speech and hear how the words are pronounced, the intonation of moderators etc. Some people can attend meetings and lectures with foreign speakers. As regards Moscow, The Moscow Times can provide information about such gatherings. -

The most important thing is to be positive and determined. It doesn’t matter what you are learning — English or snowboarding. Believe in yourself, trust your teacher and practice, practice, practice! If you go to the gym and train regularly, you have a beautiful body. If you use any opportunity to speak, then your speaking skills improve considerably. Nothing will work unless you do.What work or life experiences have helped you become a better teacher?
The most precious experience I get every day while teaching students. They inspire me not only to develop my language and teaching skills but to grow as a person. I’m really thankful to my students for their unexpected and thought-provoking questions, hot discussions and interesting facts, stories and experience in different spheres. Communication with different people gives me energy and stimulates me to achieve new goals. While teaching other people I have realized that you don’t have to be better than other people, just better than you were yesterday. What’s the best thing about teaching or learning a foreign language?
I love English and I’m really happy to help other people to master it. It’s very rewarding when my students return from business trips or holidays and share their impressions about their communication in English. Through teaching other people I also learn a lot and grow professionally. That’s the most amazing, rewarding and precious thing for me! -

Many of my students have passed various internationally recognized exams and gone on to live / work abroad. The list includes PET, FCE, CAE, CPE, IELTS and USMLE. -

Find books, films, TV shows, online resources, documentaries... anything that you find motivating, and spend some time every day with English. Make sure that the material you use is challenging, but not too difficult. Chances are, Shakespeare and Dickens will be far too difficult for the vast majority of learners, while Dan Brown or Stephen King will be just right. While reading, pause at certain structures or phrases that catch your attention, and ask yourself how you would normally say it, and compare it with the way they say it. Ask yourself: What does this phrase mean? How would I say it in my language? How would I normally say it in English? If you do this regularly, then every time you read a book, you will have a grammar and vocabulary lesson. What work or life experiences have helped you become a better teacher?
When I began teaching English, I taught mostly teenagers (extremely unmotivated ones, by the way) in a small city in Poland. It was the most difficult thing I've ever done - a trial by fire - and I wanted to quit, but I didn't. I struggled and had my fair share of failures, but through all of that I learned a lot in a short period of time about being a flexible, well-prepared teacher. Looking back, I learned more in those few months than I learned at university. Also, I have to say that the vast majority of my students through the years have been wonderful, and each one of them (the wonderful as well as the - how should I put it? - challenging!) has made me the teacher I am today. -

For grammar, I recommend rewriting simple examples in different contexts until you thoroughly understand it. Unfortunately, there is no more entertaining method I've come across that's as effective. For vocabulary, I HIGHLY recommend using an intelligent flashcard program like Anki. It remembers what you don't, and tests you on what you need to learn. How can learners use their free time effectively to study English?
Do what you love, just do it in English. It may be a challenge sometimes, or even painful, but make an effort to stay immersed. Of course, do your homework, but when you're done watch English language films, read magazines, listen to music, etc. -

Remember that progress can feel slow sometimes but try to enjoy it, the more you practice the more you will improve even if you don't notice it immediately. How can learners use their free time effectively to study English?
An effective use of free time would be to get out there and meet people. There are loads of groups and places to go and meet people to practice English. What are some common mistakes learners of English should avoid?
Making mistakes is all part of the learning process, don't be afraid of getting things wrong, or mispronouncing things, every error is an opportunity to learn. -

Well, you can buy a magic wand and make a wish… But if you want real results you need to work, of course. Take pains to learn the language and use it in real life whenever you can. What are some common mistakes learners of English should avoid?
Thinking that they can do without doing homework. What work or life experiences have helped you become a better teacher?
I like to flatter myself that I am a more or less decent corporate trainer. I think it is because I have dabbled in scientific and office work before I started teaching. I know what it feels like to work in a company. I understand the pressure and I know how enjoying and difficult at the same time it is to combine working and learning.
